List of artistic depictions in this mural

-Common, an American rapper and actor, debuted in 1992  with the album "Can I Borrow a Dollar?"

Common maintained an underground following into the late 1990s, after which he gained mainstream
success through his work with the Soulquarians.

-Jennifer Hudson is an American singer and actress. She rose to fame in 2004 as a finalist on the third season of American Idol, placing seventh. Following this introduction, Ms. Hudson established herself as a powerful vocalist worthy of being listed as legendary.  She went on to costar in "DreamGirls", and was given the honor to portray Aretha Franklin in the self titled movie released in 2021.

-Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became
the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954
until his death in 1968.  Born in Atlanta, King is best known for advancing civil rights
through nonviolence and civil disobedience tactics.  His  Christian beliefs and
the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi helped inspire him to action.

-Barrack Obama is an American politician who served as the 44th President
of the United States from 2009 to 2017.  A member of the Democratic Party,
he was the first African-American to be elected to the presidency.  He previously
served as a United States Senator for Illinois from 2005–2008.

-Emmett Till was a young African-American who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955 at the
age of 14.  Emmett Till was accused of offending a white woman by the name of Carolyn Bryant outside of  her family's grocery store.  No facts could be verified on the accusation.  According to the times Emmett was guilty upon accusation.  The brutality of his murder and the fact that his killers were acquitted drew attention to the long history of the  violent persecution of Black  Americans in the United States.

-Oprah Winfrey is an American media executive, actress, talk show host, television producer
and philanthropist.  She is best known for her talk show " The Oprah Winfrey Show".  Her show was
the highest-rated television program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011.

-Malcom X was an American Muslim minister and human rights activist.  To his admirers he
was a courageous advocate for the rights of Black Americans, who indicted white America
in the harshest terms for its crimes against this portion of American society.

-Rosa Parks was  an activist in the civil rights movement.  She was best known for her pivotal role in
the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Though she was not the first to take up this form of protest against Jim Crow laws, Mrs. Parks was well connected with her local NAACP chapter.  Upon hearing of her taking this stand she gained their backing along with other individuals and social organization across America.  The United States Congress has called her "the first lady of the civil rights movement" and "the mother of the freedom movement”.

-Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist. Born into slavery,
Tubman escaped and subsequently made around thirteen missions to rescue approximately
seventy enslaved people.  These included family and friends.  She created a network of cross cultural connections that later became known as the "Underground Railroad."  Those who believed in her mission gave her the name of "Moses".  For, just as he moved with unfaltering belief to bring others to freedom,  Mrs Tubman leaned fully into her faith in God to change the face of a nation.

-Pablo Ruiz Picasso 25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor,
printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent
most of his adult life in France. Regarded as one of the most influential
artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement,
the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the
wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous
works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937),
a dramatic portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by the German and
Italian air forces during the Spanish Civil War.

-The Starry Night is an oil on canvas by the Dutch post-impressionist painter
Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June 1889, it depicts the view from the east-facing
window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise,
with the addition of an idealized village. It has been in the permanent
collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941, acquired
through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest. Regarded as among Van Gogh's finest works,
The Starry Night is one of the most recognized paintings
in the history of Western culture.

Content Explanation and inspiration:
Primitivism is a mode of aesthetic idealization that either emulates or
aspires to recreate "primitive" experience. In Western art,
primitivism typically has borrowed from non-Western or prehistoric people perceived
to be "primitive", such as Paul Gauguin's inclusion of Tahitian motifs in paintings
and ceramics. Borrowings from primitive art has been important to the development of
modern art. Primitivism has often been critiqued for reproducing the racist stereotypes
about non-European peoples used by Europeans to justify colonial conquest.

The term "primitivism" is often applied to other professional painters working
in the style of naïve or folk art like Henri Rousseau, Mikhail Larionov, Paul Klee and others.

The Venus of Willendorf is an 11.1-centimetre-tall (4.4 in) Venus figurine estimated to
have been made 30,000 BCE. It was found on August 7, 1908 by a workman named Johann Veran or
Josef Veram during excavations conducted by archaeologists Josef Szombathy, Hugo Obermaier
and Josef Bayer at a paleolithic site near Willendorf, a village in Lower Austria near the
town of Krems. It is carved from an oolitic limestone that is not local to the area,
and tinted with red ochre. The figurine is now in the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.

Chinese dragons, also known as East Asian dragons, are legendary creatures in Chinese mythology,
Chinese folklore, and East Asian culture at large. Chinese dragons have many animal-like forms
such as turtles and fish, but are most commonly depicted as snake-like with four legs.
They traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water,
rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck
for people who are worthy of it in East Asian culture. During the days of Imperial China,
the Emperor of China usually used the dragon as a symbol of his imperial power and strength.

In Chinese culture, excellent and outstanding people are compared to a dragon,
while incapable people with no achievements are compared to other,
disesteemed creatures, such as a worm. A number of Chinese proverbs and
idioms feature references to a dragon, such as "Hoping one's son will become a dragon"

In Aztec mythology, Xolotl was the god with associations to both lightning and death.
He was associated with the sunset and would guard the Sun as it
traveled through the underworld every night. Dogs were associated with Xolotl.
This deity and a dog were believed to lead the soul on its journey to the underworld.
He was commonly depicted as a monstrous dog. Xolotl was the god of fire and lightning.
He was also god of twins, monsters, misfortune, sickness, and deformities.
Xolotl is the canine brother and twin of Quetzalcoatl, the pair being sons
of the virgin Coatlicue. He is the dark personification of Venus, the evening star,
and was associated with heavenly fire.

African Mask: In most traditional African cultures, the person
who wears a ritual mask conceptually loses his or her human life
and turns into the spirit represented by the mask itself.
This transformation of the mask wearer into a spirit usually relies
on other practices, such as specific types of music and dance,
or ritual costumes that contribute to conceal the mask-wearer's
human identity. The mask wearer thus becomes a sort of medium that allows for
a dialogue between the community and the
spirits (usually those of the dead or nature-related spirits).
Masked dances are a part of most traditional African ceremonies
related to weddings, funerals, initiation rites, and so on.
Some of the most complex rituals that have been studied by
scholars are found in Nigerian cultures such as those of the Yoruba
and Edo peoples, that bear some resemblances to the Western notion of theatre.

Since every mask has a specific spiritual meaning, most traditions
comprise several different traditional masks. The traditional religion of the
Dogon people of Mali, for example, comprises three main cults
(the Awa or cult of the dead, the Bini or cult of the communication
with the spirits, and the Lebe or cult of nature); each of these has its
pantheon of spirits, corresponding to 78 different types of masks overall.

Northwest Coast transformation masks manifest transformation, usually
an animal changing into a mythical being or one animal becoming another.
Masks are worn by dancers during ceremonies, they pull strings to open and move
the mask—in effect, animating it. In the Eagle mask shown above from the collection
of the American Museum of Natural History, you can see the wooden frame and netting
that held the mask on the dancer’s head. When the cords are pulled, the eagle’s
face and beak split down the center, and the bottom of the beak opens downwards,
giving the impression of a bird spreading its wings (see image below).
Transformed, the mask reveals the face of an ancestor.

Lascaux (French: Grotte de Lascaux, ) is the setting of a complex of caves near the
village of Montignac, in the department of Dordogne in southwestern France.
Over 600 parietal wall paintings cover the interior walls and ceilings of the cave.
The paintings represent primarily large animals, typical local and contemporary fauna
that correspond with the fossil record of the Upper Paleolithic time.
The drawings are the combined effort of many generations, and with continued debate,
the age of the paintings is estimated at around 17,000 years (early Magdalenian).
Lascaux was inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979, as element
of the Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley.

The large stone statues of moai, for which Easter Island is famous,
were carved in the period 1100–1680 AD (rectified radio-carbon dates).
A total of 887 monolithic stone statues have been inventoried on the
island and in museum collections. Although often identified as
"Easter Island heads", the statues have torsos, most of them ending at the top of the thighs;
a small number are complete figures that kneel on bent knees with their hands
over their stomachs.[Some upright moai have become buried up to their necks by shifting soils.

Artist: Rahmaan Statik
Medium:  spray paint on concrete
Size: 15x30ft

Content Explanation and inspirations
Age of Aquarius" is an astrological term denoting either the current or
forthcoming astrological age, depending on the method of calculation.
Astrologers maintain that an astrological age is a product of the earth's
slow precessional rotation and lasts for 2,160 years, on average
(26,000-year period of precession / 12 zodiac signs = 2,160 years).

There are various methods of calculating the length of an astrological
age. In sun-sign astrology, the first sign is Aries, followed by Taurus,
Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius,
and Pisces, whereupon the cycle returns to Aries and through the zodiacal signs again.
Astrological ages, however, proceed in the opposite
direction ("retrograde" in astronomy). Therefore, the Age of
Aquarius follows the Age of Pisces.

Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon of World War II, representing
the women who worked in factories and shipyards during World War II,
many of whom produced munitions and war supplies. These women sometimes
took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who joined the military.
Rosie the Riveter is used as a symbol of American feminism and women's
economic power. Similar images of women war workers appeared in other
countries such as Britain and Australia. Images of women workers were
widespread in the media as government posters, and commercial advertising
was heavily used by the government to encourage women to volunteer for wartime
service in factories. Rosie the Riveter became the subject and title of
a song and a Hollywood movie during WWII.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (??????Kanagawa-oki nami ura, "Under a wave off Kanagawa"),
also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave, is a woodblock print by the
Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1829 and 1833 in
the late Edo period as the first print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.
It is Hokusai's most famous work, and one of the most recognizable works of Japanese art in the world.

The image depicts an enormous wave threatening three boats off the coast of the town of
Kanagawa (the present-day city of Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture) while Mount Fuji rises
in the background. While sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is more likely to be
a large rogue wave. As in many of the prints in the series, it depicts the area around Mount Fuji
under particular conditions, and the mountain itself appears in the background.

Original impressions of the print are in many Western collections,
including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum,
the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art,
the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and in Claude Monet's
home in Giverny, France, among many other collections.

Drowning Girl (also known as Secret Hearts or I Don't Care! I'd Rather Sink)
is a 1963 painting in oil and synthetic polymer paint on canvas by Roy Lichtenstein.
Using the conventions of comic book art, a thought bubble conveys the thoughts
of the figure, while Ben-Day dots echo the effect of the mechanized printing process.
It is one of the most representative paintings of the pop art movement,
and part of the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection since 1971.
The painting is considered among Lichtenstein's most significant works,
perhaps on a par with his acclaimed 1963 diptych Whaam!. Drowning Girl has
been described as a "masterpiece of melodrama", and is one of the artist's
earliest images depicting women in tragic situations, a theme to which he
often returned in the mid-1960s.

The painting shows a teary-eyed woman on a turbulent sea. She is emotionally
distressed, seemingly from a romance. A thought bubble reads: "I Don't Care!
I'd Rather Sink — Than Call Brad For Help!" This narrative element highlights
the clichéd melodrama, while its graphics reiterate Lichtenstein's theme of
painterly work imitating mechanized reproduction. The work is derived from
a 1962 DC Comics panel, while also borrowing from Hokusai's The Great Wave
off Kanagawa and from elements of modernist artists Jean Arp and Joan Miró.
It is one of several Lichtenstein works that mention a character named Brad
who is absent from the picture. Both the graphical and narrative elements of
the work are cropped from the source image.

Metamorphosis II is a woodcut print by the Dutch artist M. C. Escher.
It was created between November, 1939 and March, 1940. This print measures 19.2 by 389.5
centimetres (7 1/2 in × 12 ft 9 3/8 in) and was printed from 20 blocks on 3 combined sheets.

Like Metamorphosis I, the concept of this piece is to morph one image into a
tessellated pattern and then slowly alter that pattern eventually to become a new image.

The process begins left to right with the word metamorphose (the Dutch form of the word metamorphosis)
in a black rectangle, followed by several smaller metamorphose rectangles forming a grid pattern.
This grid then becomes a black and white checkered pattern, which then becomes tessellations
of reptiles, a honeycomb, insects, fish, birds and a pattern of three-dimensional blocks with red tops.

These blocks then become the architecture of the Italian coastal town of Atrani
(see Atrani, Coast of Amalfi). In this image Atrani is linked by a bridge to a
tower in the water, which is actually a rook piece from a chess set. There are
other chess pieces in the water and the water becomes a chess board. The chess
board leads to a checkered wall, which then returns to the word metamorphose.

The Marilyn Diptych (1962) is a silkscreen painting by American pop artist Andy
Warhol depicting Marilyn Monroe. The piece is one of the artist's most noted works,
and it has been praised by several cultural critics such as Camille Paglia. The original
piece is currently owned by the National Gallery of Victoria.

The Mask of Tutankhamun is a death mask of the 18th-dynasty ancient
Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun (reigned 1332–1323 BC). It was discovered by
Howard Carter in 1925 in tomb KV62 and is now housed in
the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The mask is one of the most well known works of art in the world.

According to the Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves, the mask is "not only the quintessential image
from Tutankhamun's tomb, it is perhaps the best-known object from ancient Egypt itself.
Since 2001, research has suggested that it may originally have been intended
for Queen Neferneferuaten; her royal name (Ankhkheperure) was found in a
partly erased cartouche on the inside of the mask.

Ganesha (Sanskrit: ????, Ga?esa, also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, Pillaiyar and Binayak,
is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon.
His image is found throughout India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bali (Indonesia),
Bangladesh and Nepal. Hindu denominations worship him regardless of affiliations.
Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains and Buddhists.

Content Explanation:
The Birth of Venus is a painting by the Italian artist Sandro Botticelli probably
made in the mid 1480s. It depicts the goddess Venus arriving at the shore after her birth,
when she had emerged from the sea fully-grown
(called Venus Anadyomeneand often depicted in art).
The painting is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.

Although the two are not a pair, the painting is inevitably
discussed with Botticelli's other very large mythological painting, the Primavera,
also in the Uffizi. They are among the most famous paintings in the world, and icons
of the Italian Renaissance; of the two, the Birth is even better known
than the Primavera. As depictions of subjects from classical mythology on
a very large scale they were virtually unprecedented in Western art since
classical antiquity, as was the size and prominence of a nude female figure
in the Birth. It used to be thought that they were both commissioned by the
same member of the Medici family, but this is now uncertain.

They have been endlessly analysed by art historians, with the main themes being:
the emulation of ancient painters and the context of wedding celebrations (generally agreed),
the influence of Renaissance Neo-Platonism (somewhat controversial), and
the identity of the commissioners (not agreed). Most art historians agree,
however, that the Birth does not require complex analysis to decode its meaning,
in the way that the Primavera probably does. While there are subtleties in the painting,
its main meaning is a straightforward, if individual, treatment of a traditional scene
from Greek mythology, and its appeal is sensory and very accessible, hence its enormous popularity.

The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512,
is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art.

The ceiling is that of the Sistine Chapel, the large papal chapel built
within the Vatican between 1477 and 1480 by Pope Sixtus IV, for whom the
chapel is named. It was painted at the commission of Pope Julius II. The chapel
is the location for papal conclaves and many other important services.

The ceiling's various painted elements form part of a larger scheme of
decoration within the Chapel, which includes the large fresco The Last
Judgment on the sanctuary wall, also by Michelangelo, wall paintings by
several leading painters of the late 15th century including Sandro Botticelli,
Domenico Ghirlandaio and Pietro Perugino, and a set of large tapestries
by Raphael, the whole illustrating much of the doctrine of the Catholic Church.

Central to the ceiling decoration are nine scenes from the Book of Genesis
of which The Creation of Adam is the best known, having an iconic standing
equaled only by Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the hands of God and Adam
being reproduced in countless imitations. The complex design includes several
sets of individual figures, both clothed and nude, which allowed Michelangelo to
fully demonstrate his skill in creating a huge variety of poses for the human figure
and which have provided an enormously influential pattern book of models for other artists ever since.

Street art is visual art created in public locations,
usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context
of traditional art venues. Other terms for this type of art include
"independent public art", "post-graffiti", and "neo-graffiti", and is
closely related with urban art and guerrilla art. Common forms and
media include spray paint graffiti, stencil graffiti,
wheatpaste poster art, sticker art, street installations, and sculpture.
Video projection and yarn bombing have also gained some popularity
near the turn of the 21st century.

Street art, guerilla art, and graffiti
Graffiti is characteristically made up of written words that are
meant to represent a group or community in a covert way and in plain sight.
The tell tale sign of street art is that it usually includes images,
illustrations, or symbols that are meant to convey a message.
While both works are meant to represent or tell a message to viewers,
one difference between the two comes in the specific
viewers that it is meant for. One trait of street art that has helped
to bring it to positive light in the public eye is that the messages
shown in these public spaces are usually made to be understandable to all.

While both of these types of art have many differences, there are more
similarities than their origins. Both graffiti and street art are works
of art that are created with the same intent. Most artists, whether they
are working anonymously, creating an intentionally incomprehensible message,
or fighting for some greater cause are working with the same ambitions for
popularity, recognition, and the public display or outpouring of their
personal thoughts, feelings, and/or passions.

The term street art is described in many different ways,
one of which is the term "guerrilla art." Both terms describe
these public works that are placed with meaning and intent.
They can be done anonymously for works that are created to confront
taboo public issues that will result in backlash, or under the name of
a well-known artist. With any terminology, these works of art are created
as a primary way to express the artist's thoughts on many topics and public issues.

One defining trait or feature of street art is that it is created on or
in a public area without or against the permission of the owner.
This is a trait which falls in line with that of graffiti. A main
distinction between the two comes in the second trait of street art or guerrilla art,
where it is made to represent and display a purposefully
uncompliant act that is meant to challenge its surrounding environment.
This challenge can be granular, focusing on issues within the community or
broadly sweeping, addressing global issues on a public stage.

This is how the term "guerilla art" was associated with this type of work and behavior.
The word ties back to guerilla warfare in history where attacks are made wildly,
without control, and with no rules of engagement. This type of warfare was dramatically
different than the previously formal and traditional fighting that went on in wars normally.
When used in the context of street art, the term guerilla art is meant to give nod to the
artist's uncontrolled, unexpected, and often unnamed attack on societal structure or norms.

The Mona Lisa is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian
Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci that has been described as
"the best known, the most visited, the most written about,
the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world".[1]
The Mona Lisa is also one of the most valuable paintings in the world.
It holds the Guinness World Record for the highest known insurance valuation
in history at $100 million in 1962, which is worth nearly $800 million in 2017.

The painting is thought to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini,
the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, and is in oil on a white Lombardy poplar panel.
It had been believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506; however,
Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517.
Recent academic work suggests that it would not have been started before 1513.
It was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic,
on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797.

The subject's expression, which is frequently described as enigmatic,[9]
the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modelling of forms,
and the atmospheric illusionism were novel qualities that have
contributed to the continuing fascination and study of the work.

The Pietà  English: "The Pity"; 1498–1499) is a work of Renaissance sculpture
by Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City.
It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist.
The statue was commissioned for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères,
who was a representative in Rome. The sculpture, in Carrara marble,
was made for the cardinal's funeral monument, but was moved to its current location,
the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century.
It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed.
This famous work of art depicts the body of
Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion.
The theme is of Northern origin. Michelangelo's interpretation
of the Pietà is unprecedented in Italian sculpture.
It is an important work as it balances the Renaissance
ideals of classical beauty with naturalism.

Freedom from Want, also known as The Thanksgiving Picture or
I'll Be Home for Christmas, is the third of the Four Freedoms series of four
oil paintings by American artist Norman Rockwell. The works were inspired by
United States President Franklin D.
Roosevelt's 1941 State of the Union Address, known as Four Freedoms.
The painting was created in November 1942 and published in the March 6,
1943 issue of The Saturday Evening Post.
All of the people in the picture were friends and family
of Rockwell in Arlington, Vermont, who were
photographed individually and painted into the scene.
The work depicts a group of people gathered around a
dinner table for a holiday meal. Having been partially
created on Thanksgiving Day to depict the celebration,
it has become an iconic representation for Americans of the
Thanksgiving holiday and family holiday gatherings in general.
The Post published Freedom from Want with a corresponding essay
by Carlos Bulosan as part of the Four Freedoms series.
Despite many who endured sociopolitical hardships abroad,
Bulosan's essay spoke on behalf of those enduring
the socioeconomic hardships domestically,
and it thrust him into prominence.

"the kind of people I fancied should live in that house."
It depicts a farmer standing beside a woman who has been interpreted to be his sister.
The figures were modeled by Wood's sister Nan Wood Graham and their dentist Dr.
Byron McKeeby. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron
evoking 19th-century Americana, and the man is holding a pitchfork.
The plants on the porch of the house are mother-in-law's tongue

Dogs Playing Poker, by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge,
refers collectively to an 1894 painting, a 1903
series of sixteen oil paintings commissioned by
Brown & Bigelow to advertise cigars, and a 1910 painting.
All eighteen paintings in the overall series feature anthropomorphized dogs,
but the eleven in which dogs are seated around a card table have become
well known in the United States as examples of kitsch art in home decoration.
Critic Annette Ferrara has described Dogs Playing Poker as
"indelibly burned into ... the American collective-schlock subconscious ...
through incessant reproduction on all manner of pop ephemera".
Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (September 18, 1844 – January 13, 1934)
was an American artist, mainly known for his series of paintings Dogs
Playing Poker. Known as "Cash" or "Kash" in his family, he often
signed his work in the 19th century with the latter spelling,
sometimes spelling his name, for comic effect, as Kash Koolidge.

Georges-Pierre Seurat 2 December 1859 – 29 March 1891) was a
French post-Impressionist painter and draftsman. He is noted for
his innovative use of drawing media and for devising the painting
techniques known as chromoluminarism and pointillism.
Seurat's artistic personality was compounded of qualities which are
usually supposed to be opposed and incompatible: on the one hand,
his extreme and delicate sensibility; on the other, a passion for
logical abstraction and an almost mathematical precision of mind.
His large-scale work, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of
La Grande Jatte (1884–1886), altered the direction of modern
art by initiating Neo-impressionism, and is one of the icons of late 19th-century painting.

Seurat was born on the 2 December 1859 in Paris,
at 60 rue de Bondy (now rue René Boulanger). The Seurat family moved to
136 boulevard de Magenta (now 110 boulevard de Magenta) in 1862 or 1863. His father,
Antoine Chrysostome Seurat, originally from Champagne, was a former
legal official who had become wealthy from speculating in property,
and his mother, Ernestine Faivre, was from Paris. Georges had a brother,
Émile Augustin, and a sister, Marie-Berthe, both older. His father
lived in Le Raincy and visited his wife and children once a week at boulevard de Magenta.

Georges Seurat first studied art at the École Municipale de Sculpture et Dessin,
near his family's home in the boulevard Magenta, which was run by
the sculptor Justin Lequien. In 1878 he moved on to the École des Beaux-Arts
where he was taught by Henri Lehmann, and followed a conventional academic training,
drawing from casts of antique sculpture and copying drawings by old masters.
Seurat's studies resulted in a well-considered and fertile theory of contrasts:
a theory to which all his work was thereafter subjected. His formal artistic
education came to an end in November 1879,
when he left the École des Beaux-Arts for a year of military service.

After a year at the Brest Military Academy, he returned to
Paris where he shared a studio with his friend Aman-Jean,
while also renting a small apartment at 16 rue de Chabrol.
For the next two years, he worked at mastering the art of
monochrome drawing. His first exhibited work, shown at the
Salon, of 1883, was a Conté crayon drawing of Aman-Jean.
He also studied the works of Eugène Delacroix carefully,
making notes on his use of color.

Poster for 'Job' cigarette paper (1896)
This is perhaps one of Mucha’s best-known advertising
posters, with numerous editions subsequently published in
a variety of formats for international markets. This poster
established the iconic image of the ‘Mucha woman’ with
her swirls of exaggeratedly abundant hair.
JOB' is a trademark for the Joseph Bardou Company,
manufacturers of cigarette papers.
In this poster, Mucha placed the prominent female figure
against a background featuring Job monograms. Holding a
lighted cigarette in her hand, the woman leans her head
backward sensually, and the rising smoke forms an
arabesque, intertwining with her hair and the company
logo.
Mucha introduced a Byzantine effect, as seen in the
Gismonda poster, with the border decoration inspired by
mosaic work which adds an air of dignity to a commercial
poster. In 1898 Mucha produced another design for Job
which is known as 'great Job'.
Alfons Maria Mucha(Czech: ['alfons 'muxa]
24 July 1860 – 14 July 1939),
known as Alphonse Mucha, was a Czech painter, illustrator
and graphic artist, living in Paris during the Art Nouveau
period, best known for his distinctly stylized and decorative
theatrical posters of Sarah Bernhardt.[3] He produced
illustrations, advertisements, decorative panels and
designs which became among the best-known images
of the period.
In the second part of his career, at the age of 43, he
returned to his homeland and devoted himself to
painting a series of twenty monumental canvases
known as The Slav Epic, depicting the history of all the
Slavic peoples of the world, which he painted between
1912 and 1926. In 1928, on the 10th anniversary of the
independence of Czechoslovakia, he presented the series
to the Czech nation. He considered it his most important
work. It is now on display in the national museum of

Relativity is a lithograph print by the Dutch artist M. C. Escher, first printed in December 1953.
It depicts a world in which the normal laws of gravity do not apply.
The architectural structure seems to be the centre of an idyllic community,
with most of its inhabitants casually going about their ordinary business,
such as dining. There are windows and doorways leading to park-like outdoor settings.
All of the figures are dressed in identical attire and have featureless bulb-shaped heads.
Identical characters such as these can be found in many other Escher works.

In the world of Relativity, there are three sources of gravity,
each being orthogonal to the two others. Each inhabitant lives
in one of the gravity wells, where normal physical laws apply.
There are sixteen characters, spread between each gravity source,
six in one and five each in the other two. The apparent confusion
of the lithograph print comes from the fact that the three gravity
sources are depicted in the same space.
The structure has seven stairways, and each
stairway can be used by people who belong to two different
gravity sources. This creates interesting phenomena, such as in the top stairway,
where two inhabitants use the same stairway in the same direction and on the same side,
but each using a different face of each step; thus, one descends the stairway
as the other climbs it, even while moving in the same direction nearly side-by-side.
In the other stairways, inhabitants are depicted as climbing the stairways upside-down,
but based on their own gravity source, they are climbing normally.

Each of the three parks belongs to one of the gravity wells.
All but one of the doors seem to lead to basements below the parks.
Though physically possible, such basements are certainly unusual
and add to the surreal effect of the picture.

This is one of Escher’s most popular works and has been used in a variety of ways.

Original artist Leonardo da Vinci
The Vitruvian Man or simply L'Uomo Vitruviano is a drawing
made by the Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci around 1490.
It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the architect Vitruvius.
The drawing, which is in ink on paper, depicts a man in two
superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and inscribed
in a circle and square. The drawing and text are sometimes called the
Canon of Proportions or, less often, Proportions of Man. It is kept in the
Gabinetto dei disegni e stampe of the Gallerie dell'Accademia, in Venice, Italy,
under reference 228. Like most works on paper, it is displayed
to the public only occasionally, so it is not part of the normal exhibition of the museum.

The drawing is based on the correlations of ideal human body proportions
with geometry described by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius in Book III
of his treatise De architectura. Vitruvius described the human figure as being the
principal source of proportion among the classical orders of architecture.
Vitruvius determined that the ideal body should be eight heads high.
Leonardo's drawing is traditionally named in honor of the architect.

Albrecht Dürer
Dürer's Rhinoceros is the name commonly given to a woodcut executed by
German painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer in 1515. The image is
based on a written description and brief sketch by an unknown artist of
an Indian rhinoceros that had arrived in Lisbon in 1515. Dürer never saw
the actual rhinoceros, which was the first living example seen in Europe
since Roman times. In late 1515, the King of Portugal, Manuel I,
sent the animal as a gift for Pope Leo X, but it died in a
shipwreck off the coast of Italy in early 1516. A live rhinoceros
was not seen again in Europe until a second specimen, named Abada,
arrived from India at the court of Sebastian of Portugal in 1577,
being later inherited by Philip II of Spain around 1580.

J. M. Flagg's 1917 poster was based on the original
British Lord Kitchener poster of three years earlier.
It was used to recruit soldiers for both World War I and World War II.
Flagg used a modified version of his own face for Uncle Sam,
and veteran Walter Botts provided the pose

James Montgomery Flagg (June 18, 1877 – May 27, 1960) was an
American artist, comics artist and illustrator. He worked in
media ranging from fine art painting to cartooning, but
is best remembered for his political posters.

He created his most famous work in 1917, a poster to encourage
recruitment in the United States Army during World War I.
It showed Uncle Sam pointing at the viewer
(inspired by a British recruitment poster showing Lord Kitchener in a similar pose)
with the caption "I Want YOU for U.S. Army". Over four million copies
of the poster were printed during World War I, and it was revived
for World War II. Flagg used his own face for that of
Uncle Sam (adding age and the white goatee), he said later,
simply to avoid the trouble of arranging for a model.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt praised his resourcefulness
for using his own face as the model. By some accounts though,
Flagg had a neighbor, Walter Botts, pose for the piece.
At his peak, Flagg was reported to have been the highest paid
magazine illustrator in America. He worked for the Saturday
Evening Post and Collier's which were two of the most popular
US Journals. In 1946, Flagg published his autobiography, Roses and
Buckshot. Apart from his work as an illustrator, Flagg painted
portraits which reveal the influence of John Singer Sargent.
Flagg's sitters included Mark Twain and Ethel Barrymore;
his portrait of Jack Dempsey now hangs in the Great Hall of the
National Portrait Gallery. In 1948, he appeared in a Pabst Blue
Ribbon magazine ad which featured the illustrator working at an easel in his
New York studio with a young lady standing at
his side and a tray with an open bottle of Pabst
and two filled glasses sat before them.
James Montgomery Flagg died on May 27, 1960, in New York City.
He was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York City.

Keith Allen Haring (May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1990)
was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti-like
work grew out of the New York City street culture of the 1980s.

Haring's work grew to popularity from his spontaneous drawings
in New York City subways – chalk outlines on blank black advertising-space
backgrounds – depicting radiant babies, flying saucers, and deified dogs.
After public recognition he created larger scale works such as colorful murals,
many of them commissioned. His imagery has "become a widely recognized visual language".
His later work often addressed political and societal themes – especially
homosexuality and AIDS – through his own iconography.

Content Explanation: Student artwork depicting master painter Juan Gris .
Creative director/curator Rahmaan Statik.
Original painting by Juan Gris In 1906 Juan Gris traveled to Paris,
where he met Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and participated in the
development of Cubism. Just six years later, Gris too was known as a
Cubist and identified by at least one critic as "Picasso’s disciple."
Gris’s style draws upon Analytic Cubism—with its deconstruction and
simultaneous viewpoint of objects—but is distinguished by a more
systematic geometry and crystalline structure. Here he fractured
his sitter’s head, neck, and torso into various planes and simple,
geometric shapes but organized them within a regulated, compositional
structure of diagonals. The artist further ordered the composition of
this portrait by limiting his palette to cool blue, brown, and gray
tones that, in juxtaposition, appear luminous and produce a gentle
undulating rhythm across the surface of the painting.
Gris depicted Picasso as a painter, palette in hand.
The inscription, "Hommage à Pablo Picasso," at the bottom right
of the painting demonstrates Gris’s respect for Picasso as a
leader of the artistic circles of Paris and as an innovator of Cubism.
At the same time, the inscription helped Gris solidify his own place
within the Paris art world when he exhibited the portrait at
the Salon des Indépendants in the spring of 1912.

The Old Guitarist is an oil painting by Pablo Picasso created
late 1903 – early 1904. It depicts an old, blind, haggard
man with threadbare clothing weakly hunched over his
guitar, playing in the streets of Barcelona, Spain. It is
currently on display at the Art Institute of Chicago as
part of the Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection.[1]
At the time of The Old Guitarist’s creation, Modernism, Impressionism,
Post-Impressionism, and Symbolism Had
merged and created an overall movement called
Expressionism which greatly influenced Picasso’s style.
Furthermore, El Greco, Picasso’s poor standard of living,
and the suicide of a dear friend influenced Picasso’s
style at the time which came to be known as his Blue
Period. Several x-rays, infrared images and
examinations by curators revealed three different figures
hidden behind the old guitarist.
